Food, Water, Waste
Hollyburn Chalet is a wilderness cabin with no running water, electricity or indoor plumbing.
drinking water |
There is NO RUNNING WATER at Hollyburn. You may need to carry in your drinking water. You can also melt snow, or fetch creek water. There is a tap at the Ranger Station that is sometimes flowing; do not rely on it! Water from these sources must be purified before drinking. There are jugs and pots available on site to carry water. Upon departure from Hollyburn, please fill all “snow pots” on the wood stove with snow, and return them to the airtight stove top. This will ensure that the next group has enough water started for hand washing upon arrival.

waste water |
Scrape all pots and dishes before washing, then strain waste water before pouring down the sink. Failure to do this can attract wildlife as the water drains outside not far from the cabin. Never put grease down the sink; place it in a container or bag, and take it home with your garbage. Do NOT throw waste water or grease in the latrines.
|
food storage |
Keep food in plastic containers provided to prevent contamination by rodents. To keep food cooler, containers can be placed under the building, accessible via the trap door in the kitchen. Ensure the lids are securely fastened and set a piece of firewood on top of container.
To use icebox, fill the buckets in the top box with snow or ice. Before leaving the cabin, empty buckets, and leave icebox doors ajar to allow icebox to dry and air out. Clean all food and water containers before you leave and turn them upside down to prevent rodents from moving in. |
latrines |
DO NOT DISPOSE OF HYGIENE PRODUCTS IN LATRINE! Caretakers have had the unpleasant task of removing these items from human waste by hand, in order to extend the life of the latrine. Plastics hinder composting and cause a significant waste issue. Use a garbage bag in the latrine and PACK IT OUT at the end of your stay.
Do not put sanitary napkins, tampons or any paper product except white, single-ply toilet paper down the latrine. Bring a plastic tub or large freezer bag to hold toilet paper. Remove leftover toilet paper at the end of your stay. Lock the latrine when you leave. Please leave the latrine door closed at all times to keep out snow and wildlife. |
