Firewood & Burning
COMPRESSED LOGS
Getting wood to the chalet in a wheelbarrow is arduous work, so please don’t use any more than you need. It is mandatory that you take 10 compressed (e.g. Presto, Facto) logs per night to supplement the wood supply. Burn compressed logs overnight; they will keep you warmest. Use unwrapped logs only; wrapped logs leave creosote in the chimney and can cause chimney fires. Burn no more than two at a time in the airtight or one in the cook stove. |
CHOPPING WOOD There is a hydraulic wood splitter next to the large wood box for the airtight stove. This can be used to split large pieces so that they are a better size for starting a fire. Instructions are on the bulletin board. A chopping block is located on the front porch, which you can move to the front yard to use; return it to the porch before leaving the cabin. Do not chop wood on porch. BEFORE YOU LEAVE Wood is stored under the cabin and can be accessed via the hatch under the loft stairs. Take wood from the side labelled "This Years Wood" Fill the wood box to level, so the wood can dry for the next group. Fill the wood box under the loft stairs with kindling and small pieces of wood suitable for the cook stove. There should be enough wood in appropriate sizes so that the next group coming in can start a fire without chopping wood first. |
GARBAGE & RECYCLING
Burn only clean paper and cardboard. Take all other garbage back with you. Clean garbage cans and turn them upside down on departure. DO NOT BURN Plastic, tinfoil, tins, tetra boxes or garbage in the stoves. |
Snow Clearing
If chimneys are obviously blocked with snow and ice, they must be cleared before the stoves can be lit. Shovels and a ladder are provided. The ladder hangs inside cabin over trailside windows.
NO SLEDDING OFF ROOF!
Girls are to stay 2 metres back from drip line of cabin eaves. |
Adults should clear snow away from building to make space for any that may slide off the roof as the cabin heats up, and remove the icicles.
Stay well away from the windows and the drip line of cabin when clearing snow, and complete this task only if it can be accomplished safely. Windows shatter very easily in the cold! Please be cautious! |
